Moving Extra’s You May Consider

Some people want a quick, no frills move to save time and money. If the furniture isn’t too expensive then blanket wrapping in the truck is the fastest way to do a move. Nicer furniture may need to be blanket and shrink wrapped in the home. Furniture you don’t want any dirt on at all you may want to use special furniture bags rather than just shrink wrap. These extra’s take time and materials but may be the best decision if your furniture deserves special care.

A quick way to do a move is to have your movers deliver your items to a main accessible point and then the homeowner will deal with everything from there. Room stickers and colour coding and marking on boxes with markers can also be used to help you movers deliver all the items to their appropriate rooms. The movers can also do all your unpacking and setup if you like.

If the home is nice and the carpets are clean than you may wish to have the movers lay down blankets to set up a staging area and shoes can be taken off inside the home. Another option is to use neoprene floor runners. The fastest way is to ask the movers to brush off their shoes and do a clean afterwards.
The movers will have a general understanding of what should be done based on the condition of the items and the home. The most important part of the equation though is that you the client tell the movers what you want so you have the moving experience you wish to have.

Commercial Moves

Moving a commercial space is much the same as moving an apartment or house. We need to know how much help you may need in terms of packing, preparation and packing materials. From here we need to know access. Where are the loading zones, elevators and what is the protocol to pre-book and how much allowable time do we have to do the move.

Knowing how much time we are allowed to do the move out will let us know how well packed and ready to go everything must be. Possibly we need multiple trucks and many extra hands to make sure we get everything out in time.

Like residential moves you can do as much or as little of the preparation as you would like. It is important to let us know if we need any special tools to take different items apart. It may be necessary to do an in person viewing to know exactly what needs to be done to make the move work smoothly.

How much padding, packaging and wrapping that needs to be done will mainly depend on what the business owner wants done and how expensive the items are.

We can also do as much or as little set up as you would like. Like residential moves staging areas can be set up or neoprene runners used as needed.

Travelling To The Islands

Travelling to the islands has its own particular sets of issues and setbacks. However being prepared and knowing a few things can help your move go smoothly.

For $20 a ferry spot can be reserved. This is important if you want to save time and money for your move. It’s never easy to know if there will be an open spot on the ferry you want to catch.

All your packing should be done well ahead of time so you are sure you will be able to load quickly and catch the ferry you reserved.

If you are not sure that the load can be done quickly a good idea is to load the day ahead. This gives the time you need to be sure you have everything and your ferry won’t be missed. The back of the moving truck is locked with a thick secure lock and parked in a safe place. Even in front of your home if you prefer.

Pricing depends on a few factors. There is an hourly rate for size of vehicle and number of movers. A gas/travel fee to get there and back and two ferry fees.

Sample pricing for a 20′ cube van with two movers taking a three bedroom condo from Vancouver to Nanaimo may be…

  • $600 gas/travel fee.
  • $120/hr from arrival to finish.
  • Two ferry fees for $250 total.
  • Two reservations for $40 total.
  • Packing material fee’s with 12% PST and GST.
  • Possibly a $100 storage fee for leaving items in truck over night.
  • Hotel fee of $120 or so if the movers need to stay overnight.
  • GST of 5% on labour.

Moves Within BC

Travelling within BC by road has it’s own sets of problem that come with time of year and weather. Spring to late Fall is always a better way to do a long distance move if you have a choice.

There is wear that comes with kilometres on the vehicle. For long distance moves there is a $4/km fee for fuel/travel for the larger cubes with power lift, $3/km fee for the 16′ cube van and $2/km of the 3/4 ton van.

There is a listed straight time fee from arrival to finish plus the other usual costs.

Sample pricing for a 3 bedroom condo from Vancouver to Kelowna may be…

  • $1600 gas/travel fee for 400 km at $4 per km.
  • $120/hr from arrival to finish. Possibly 12-14 hours in total.
  • Packing material fee’s with 12% PST and GST.
  • Possibly a $100 storage fee for leaving items in truck over night.
  • Hotel fee of $120 or so for the movers to stay overnight.
  • GST of 5% on labour.

Temporary Storage

There are often short waits needed before the move in can start. It is often just fine to put a lock on the back of the moving van if you only need storage for a day or so. For longer periods of time a storage locker is often the best way to go. There are always different promotions running and some will do one free month in hopes that you leave your belongings for another twenty years or so. For short periods of time these deals are the best way to go.
